Frost Fayre in Glastonbury 2018

It’s the Annual Frost Fayre in Glastonbury 2018

This is one of my favourite events of the year. It has now grown to be a much loved and well established day in the Glastonbury calendar, people come from all over to join in. It is just before Christmas and an occasion when the whole Town takes part in some way, as a stallholder, musician or drummer, and the most important participant - the Shopper!!!

Immersed in the Christmas Spirit

So, when the call came for Volunteers to help with Frost Fayre this year, I signed up for the first time. There was a need for stewards and many other helpers at very short notice.

Last week I spent a lot of time at Amma’s Annual Visit to the UK. I had such a fabulous time, one of the reasons for this was that I had the opportunity to do ‘Seva’ for Amma. It made my attendance such a different experience for me, and I thoroughly loved it.

Just in case you want to know the meaning of ‘Seva’

“Seva” is a Sanskrit word meaning “selfless service” or work performed without any thought of reward or repayment. In ancient India seva was believed to help one’s spiritual growth and at the same time contribute to the improvement of a community. This is the art of giving with no need to receive, where the act itself is a gift to everyone involved. Seva is the art of blessed action.

I don’t know if volunteering for the Glastonbury Frost Fayre will help my spiritual growth but I had a great time.

Glastonbury Community Volunteer for the Day

I arrived at 12.00 and was given a yellow tabard and a list of instructions. It is so well organised and everyone was very friendly.

My zone was from the Zebra crossing to the top of the High Street, a comfortable stroll. I was to support the stallholders with what ever they required. My job was also to look out for lost children and direct anyone needing medical help to the Town Hall. Thankfully the children didn’t lose their parents or fall over and hurt themselves! Thank you Angels….

When I asked the ladies on one stall if they wanted anything, one of them asked for a HUG! Another lady accepted a back rub when she looked in pain after standing for so long. I got a Latte and a cake for the Daisy Age lady when she looked like she was rushed off her feet. She had almost sold out and had been selling on her own all day, she deserved a medal!! Another couple asked me where to put the rubbish and that was about all I was asked to do. Thank you Angels

I met so many fabulous friends and caught up with guests who thought we had left the Town last year. Can I give a shout out?!!!

We are open for Bed & Breakfast again and
welcome everyone as guests including groups.

The Angel’s Divine Lila

I though that when I volunteered it would be for a couple of hours, but it turned out to be from 12 to 4.30pm. I was walking up and down, up and down on one side of the street to the other. When I looked on my Health App I had walked 17,343 steps, that’s nearly 11.3 km, no wonder my feet hurt, I had been wearing clogs all day! I was gobsmacked at how far I had travelled, every muscle hurt the next day, but I was so happy to have helped.

Avalon’s finest characters turn out in their most magical costumes and with their finest wares.

You don’t have to dress up, unless you want to, it’s a Glastonbury freedom to be able to express yourself exactly how you choose to. The Opening Parade with the Town crier, the Glastonbury Drummers and the crowd marched up the High Street at 12pm. I caught up with them on video as they were coming back down, as I stood outside Saint Johns Church.

Glastonbury’s Christmas Market

The Frost Fayre starts early at 8am and the road is reopened by 8pm, most of the stalls have sold out by 6pm, and the food vendors carry on whilst stocks last. We heard one seller send someone to the supermarket to get more potatoes, he looked like he was having a bumper day.

I have never seen so many different food outlets in the High Street. There were curries, pizza, roasted potatoes and food from Peru. Also on every corner there was every kind of alcohol for sale, especially Cider. The delicious cake stall had emptied her stall by mid afternoon, she was a very happy lady, with a wonderful big smile.

I took a picture of Nina and her Beautiful Flower Tent before and at the end of the day! Doesn’t she look happy? There are still some fairy catchers if you are in need of one?

The Magical Music of Glastonbury

There is eclectic and unusual music everywhere, on the many stages and at the Busk Stops dotted along the High Street. Drummers seem to be everywhere, keeping the beat, there were many different styles, ages and varying degrees of drumming ability. Being a drummer’s wife, I am a bit biased and can recognise a good beat when I hear one, or not! Top marks for enthusiasm and perseverance.

If you are wondering what happened to the end of the Busk Stop D Crew, I thought they had finished so I put my phone in my pocket with the video still filming, so I have the crowd roar, but no pictures, Silly Me !!!
